Learning Aim D: pre-production evaluation

Image
Evie Ruczenczyn Evaluation Throughout the pre-production process I managed to accurately complete all pre-production tasks, which can split into three categories: financial (budget for example), logistics (character permission/cast release forms) and creative (script/storyboard). By completing all of the major pre-production elements effectively, it will allow my short film to be produced a lot smoother and be more organised when it comes to creating this film.   Finance In order to create the short film, I needed funding and a budget, to explore this I researched different funding models and then I chose which one would be the most suitable option for me. I did this by making a document which outlined all of the ways I could’ve received funding and then writing the pros and cons of each. This was an informative way of setting out all of the possible solutions of funding, which I feel is clear and easy to understand. Because I am only producing a small-scale production ...

Learning Aim A: pre-production Report

Image
UNIT 4 PRE-PRODUCTION PORTFOLIO REPORT Pre-production is an essential part of film production, it is crucial that these documents and procedures are done to industry standard as this will impact the level of success the production achieves. The better, higher standard of preproduction relates to a higher success level because the production process will run more smoothly, with fewer avoidable problems. Whereas the unorganised, incomplete pre-production will severely impact the success rate. I have been approached by the County Council to create a report that they intend to send to community media organisations, in hopes to receive funding for future projects.   In this report, I will be talking through essential parts of pre-production to ensure funding is received, evaluating documentation and procedures and what successful methods have already been used in productions such as the ‘One Mile Away’ documentary and the feature film ‘Whiplash.’ FINANCE AND BUDGET To cre...

Equipment booking

Image
I created this document in order to keep a record of what equipment I had hired out, in order to do this I needed to factor in things such as how many days I needed the hire for, how much it would cost and what specific equipment I would need. By doing this, I am not only allowing myself to actually produce my media product but allowing it to be organised and run smoothly by keeping all my documents organised.

Storyboard

Image
Creating a storyboard is an essential part of pre-production planning as it provides a visual trail of my ideas for my short film. Without undertaking this activity, other cast and crew members might not be able to envision aspects of my film resulting in it not turning out and finalising the way I intended it to. In order to create a storyboard, I used post it notes a template/base for my ideas, this way I was able to easily move round the order of scenes and interchange ideas. This will positively impact my production stage as my work is readable and expresses my ideas clearly for my short film.

Call Sheet

Image
A call sheet is an essential document for pre-production planning as it provides a separate schedule for each day of filming, taking into consideration external factors such as weather and first aid safety. This is a clear, industry standard layout which has been proven to be successful. In order to create a document like this, I gathered information for the first day of filming, (each day of filming will have the same layout just adjusting the information) including cast needed, specific timing and key details. This will strengthen the process of producing my short film as I have a rigid schedule to stick to, this call sheet allows everyone on set to know where they need to be during the day and for what time, this document can act as a tick list for each day of filming. This will help to keep production smooth and on track to create the best possible film concept.

cast contact details

Image
I created a vital document a part of pre-production planning which included contact details of the producer, a supervisor for locations and the cast. This way, if anything was to happen, the contact details are easily accessible and follow a user friendly layout. In order to do this, I got contact details from the location incase they were needed, I then asked each cast member to provide at least one form of contact detail, by doing this the whole production can run a lot smoother and safer.

cast release forms

Image
To create my short film, actors to be apart of the cast was a necessity, a vital part of my production and due to my film conforming the conventions of a thriller, there is a couple of deaths within my film, therefore a slightly larger cast was needed, this was still kept to a minimum of around 7 people. In order for them to be legally allowed in my film, I needed to create a cast release form which explains what they are consenting to being a part of the production of 'HOUSE OF FUN.' By signing it they have agreed to be in my short film production, this gives my work more stability as they are guaranteed to be involved (unless any unexpected withdraws).
